First Spring Sheep Festival this Weekend

Spinners will be off to the CT Sheep & Wool Festival in Tolland CT this Saturday -- April 30th. It's the 102nd annual event, and such a great way to usher in the spring, and a year full of fiber fun. Just about an hour south of Worcester, the Tolland fairgrounds are right off Route 84 and include barns and fields of vendors, demonstrations, workshops, a fleece sale (!), sheep dog trials, and lots of good info. Hope we'll see some photos come back with spinners, along with great show-and-tell discoveries.

The Wayland Winter Farmers’ Market runs weekly on Saturdays (through March 12) from 10 AM to 2 PM in the greenhouses of Russell’s Garden Center (397 Boston Post Road, Wayland - 508-358-2283), featuring over 30 farm and specialty food vendors (http://www.russellsgardencenter.com/ to see vendor list) There are many breakfast and lunch options and seating is available in the warm, plant-filled greenhouse!

Last year we had a “Wool Day” at the Winter Market and invited New England farmers who produce wool from animals that they raise. That day was so successful, that we have decided to do it twice this season! You will find hand spun and hand dyed yarn, roving, top, raw and washed fleece in addition to wool products, including Massachusetts own “Baaay State Blanket”.

“Wool Days” are January 22nd and February 12th during market hours. This event will appeal to those who knit, crochet, weave and enjoy fiber arts. Our farm vendor list includes Bally Duff Farm (Harmony, RI) Foxhill Farm (Lee, MA), North Brook Alpaca Farm (Berlin, MA), Rag Hill Farm (Colrain, MA), Tintagel Farm (Brookfield, MA), Windy Hamlet Farm (W. Brookfield) Windy Hill Farm (Lakeville, MA) and Winterberry Farm (Leverett, MA). Additional yarns will be available from our weekly vendors, Springdell Farm and West River Creamery/Iceberg Farm.

Ellen and Mike Zepp invited the Guild to come to their homestead. They have llamas, alpacas, Peruvian Hairless Dogs, exotic birds, and a tropical greenhouse. It was a wonderful escape into their warm South American world in southern Worcester County. Delicious refreshments, a toasty wood stove, and good conversation while spinning about llama and alpaca fiber, festivals, shlepping camelids to NYC for photo shoots with Susan Sarandon, and more made for a memorable afternoon. Visiting with the the fiber animals in their respective pastures on the sunny day did much to chase away the cold. Ellen informed us that BFL are due in the springtime, much to our pleasure. As the Guild grows, so do the experiences and inspirations. Thank you to our hosts, and see you again soon when the snow melts and you welcome new arrivals.

Luke was up with the Icelandic chickens this morning, this boy does not believe in jet lag. After breakfast we took a long walk on a long lunge line around the fenced part of the farm so he could see the sheep outside and they could see him. there was also a little snarling on the part of Emily, but that is natural. So , he got to see the area he is to patrol under control. He really is very smart and obedient. these dogs are usually introduced to the flock when they are puppies so that they naturally adopt the sheep , or goats as their family. I have to do things slowly with Luke since he is older and didn't have that experience. But, since he didn't have an actual home and family I think that this transition will be easier that a dog who was attached to humans. We just can't rush things. So I am taking him out now and then later tonight . And then again in the morning tomorrow. So far so good.

"Mike and my Winter project is underway - sleeve, sort chronologically and scan the postcards my grandfather ( Herman C. Maddocks aka Pappy ) sent to his eventual wife during his tour of duty on the USS New Maine . This was part of the Great White Fleet that was commissioned to circle the globe between 1907 & 1909. Among these, we came upon the attached photo of Ifigau ( Philippine Islanders ) spinners. Check out the elevated tube with the hole in the bottom - kind of like a combination of a distaff and a diz. It makes the process stationary but I'll bet it goes lots faster. Wonder what they're spinning."

The Gathering 2010 in West Dover, VT at Mount Snow was a memorable weekend. Classes Friday, Saturday and Sunday, plus diversions into the fiber vendors' hall, chatty meals with new friends, and late night spinning/knitting/laughing sessions were so so so satisfying. Chris, Betsy and Lori discovered some new Central MA fiber folks, and met great mentors and students from Michigan to Maine. This time next year the Northeast Handspinners Association takes us to Rhode Island for the one-day event, and in 2012 we heard it will be Connecticut that hosts the three-day event.

We're posting some highlights from the weekend: teachers Jody Stoddard, Kate Walsh, and Nancy Morey's classes, plus scenes from the dining hall, spontaneous spin-ins, and beautiful results.

Three spinners off to The Gathering this weekend

Chris, Betsy and Lori are attending the 2010 Gathering in at Mount Snow, Vermont this Friday, Saturday and Sunday. What an indulgence into all things spinning and fiber! This biennial convergence of handspinners from throughout the Northeast is such a lot of fun. We're holing up at Mt Snow's resort lodge, with sauna and heated outdoor pool at our disposal, plus the company of hundreds of like-minded fanatics! We three are taking different workshops, so we'll have much show-and-tell fodder for subsequent meetings.

Upcoming Guild meetings are the 13th and the 21st this month.

Sheep to Shawl fun

Think we have nice seasonable weather in store for our Guild's appearance at the SSLP 2010. Betsy, Dottie, and maybe a one or two others will help show how do card, knit, spin and more. Loads of publicity will hopefully have reached curious minds and we'll see all ages come for a look and hands-on. Will have my camera at the ready to document much of it. Can't wait to observe the llama shearing at 2PM, when Oberon of Orchid Patch in Southbridge MA will get his "haircut" and share his fabulous fleece with observers. Then, Elaine is hosting our next Guild meeting on Sunday. Lots to do!

Save the date for Sheep to Shawl, Llama to Pajama 2010, a free festival on Saturday, October 23, 2010, 12 noon to 4PM, rain or shine at Green Hill Park Farm in Worcester. Watch a llama get a haircut, learn to weave, meet some sheep, try spinning, and knit some stitches! Enjoy games, music, giveaways, and more. Learn about fiber farms, fiber artists, and fiber businesses found throughout Central MA. For all ages and wheelchair accessible, this fun outdoor fest is sponsored by the City of Worcester and VSA Massachusetts, and made possible by a grant from the Greater Worcester Community Foundation. Guild Goes to NOFA Summer Conference!

Four of us are off this weekend to give a presentation at the annual Summer Conference, a NOFA sponsored event, at the campus of UMass Amherst. Betsy leads the way with help from Maile, Chris and Lori. From sheep through spinning and dyeing, we'll share our knowledge and passion at the largest venue yet. We've got our fiber map, and a working business card, so things are feeling pretty official. We've all been busy learning and experimenting all summer. Dyeing season is upon us, and new tools have entered the mix. Should be an exciting fall!

Maile, Betsy, Dot, and Chris had a grand time in June playing with Chris' new large drum carder. Can you tell?! Since then, the batts have been flying! Chris is so generous with her new toy, and we all appreciate being able to move our raw fleece from fluffy fiber to beautiful batts, ready to spin into glorious and unique yarns. At our last meeting on July 11th, Lisa brought her awe-inspiring picker, and those of us with dense fleece watched the transformation with amazement. In one end went the locks and such, out the other side came the most delicate, airy clouds of spinnable fiber. Thank you to both women for rocking our fiber processing worlds!

Thank you Maile for organizing a wonderful afternoon workshop last weekend with your "hooking" teacher Bev. Her dyeing demonstrations were fun and easy to follow, and the range of colors was spectacular. We are all inspired to do much more dyeing in the future. Bev is a delightful person and we can imagine how terrific it must be to be one of her regular students. No wonder your hooked rugs are so fabulous!

Post-Meeting Thoughts

Betsy hosted us yesterday and Dorothy broke the news that she is moving out to CA to be with Ace, and so must sell or rent/lease the sheep farm in West Brookfield, AND sell some of the Icelandics. We will miss you Dorothy! We suburban and urban members were surely all secretly wondering how to stash some of her sheep in our backyards. Betsy composed a great list of upcoming fiber events and activities,and we finalized changes to our Alyson Lee-designed fiber map. We're looking forward to a dyeing workshop with Maile's rug hooking teacher next month, as well as a demo at Wachusett Meadows Sheep Shearing Day. Member Sara's sheep were shorn on Saturday and Betsy got to observe (on the first day of Spring!). The season is truly kicking into gear!

Guild members Sharon, Maile, Sara and Elaine joined Lori at her house for the March 7th meeting. We spun in a circle facing one another, and it felt a bit like a sheep-to-shawl contest! Sharon joined us for some knitting and chatting before heading off to her daughter Claire's concert. We discussed a variety of upcoming events and ideas: our Guild's first workshop at NOFA Ma's Summer Conference, our fiber map now in rough layout format thanks to Alyson Lee, our April dyeing workshop with Maile's rug hooking guru, and more.

The next meeting is at Betsy's house on March 21st.

Prepare to meet these two fellows and more cloven hoofed fiber beasts at the 2010 Sheep to Shawl, Llama to Pajama Family Fiber Event slated for Saturday, October 23rd, 12 noon to 4PM at the Green Hill Farm in Green Hill Park, Worcester MA. The event was first held in 2004, then again in 2005. It is being revived under the awesome organizational leadership of a planning committee headed up by Nat and Mihoko of Saori Worcester Freestyle Weaving Studio. Fun fiber-related games, contests, songs and other activities along with plenty of demos by area fiber farmers, spinners, knitters and dyers all to education young and old about how we end up with the clothing on our backs! Should be a fun fall fiber day!

Snowy Day -- Perfect for Spinning!

Time to get working on knitting up recently spun "art yarn" made while experimenting with Maile last month. An assortment of locks, roving, and just plain fluff plyed with shiny black Tencel produced this hank, enough for something small and sweet.

Sign of progress . . . almost done with all the dyeing samples we worked on last September with Ellen Stone. Will start the last bit of fern-dyed roving (a lovely heathery green), then time to set it all and think about a project!

What are other spinners up to? Chase away those snowflakes with some spinning stories!

Why would you like to be listed?

First, there are advantages to people working with different aspects of the fiber process, or the same aspect, being readily able to exchange information and knowledge. Second, this is also a great chance to make new friends with shared interests. Third, many of us may become each other’s preferred customers and vendors. Do you have products or services to sell?

Yes. We sell Saori looms, books and accessories (books can be bought through our website using Paypal). In 2010, we will be selling Mihoko’s original hand-woven items online. We also contract with various organizations to start Saori programs for their students, employees, clients, patients, etc. through our Saori Worcester Partnership Site program. We offer a wide range of educational consulting and curriculum development services that relate weaving and fiber arts generally to academic disciplines. Finally, we contract with various organizations to create programs that integrate people with disabilities or other marginalizing/isolating situations/conditions into the larger community through friendships and shared creative & social experience. Do you give classes or teach?

Small but sweet meeting on February 7th

Thanks to Maile for hosting Betsy and Lori for a small but satisfying Guild meeting. Tasty treats and great conversation interspersed with spinning and Guild planning for the coming months.

The next meeting is at Elaine's house on February 21st. This coming weekend Guild members are touring up to Green Mountain Spinnery in Putney VT, a much awaited field trip to one of the nation's foremost natural spinning mills. There's likely a visit to a sheep farm to be tacked on as well!

The long list of upcoming New England/New York fiber festivals was reviewed, and calendars were marked. Inquiries into another dyeing workshop with Maile's hooking mentor, a trip to a Central MA Merino farm, and our Guild appearance at the Wachusett Meadows Sheep Shearing Day on April 3rd were all discussed.

Betsy shared a library book that got plenty of oohs and aahs: Fiber Gathering, by Joanne Seiff (Wiley publishers). The must-have list of publications just keeps growing.

Guild members heard from Jenny who is all excited about dyeing with mushrooms. Hopefully we can tackle that too at some point this year.

At the library recently I picked up The Natural Knitter, published in 2006. I have a hunch it was shared with the group already (Chris?), but if not, I wanted to be sure to comment about it. What a delightful publication! It really celebrates the joy of working with natural animal and plant fibers, and has gorgeous photographs. This is truly one for our libraries!

Though we've been meeting for a few years now (thanks to founder Christina Lentz-Larsen of The Sheep Shack in Holden, MA), we are now entering into the blogosphere! Musings, updates, shared discoveries, and general comments about our fiber fanaticism will be forthcoming.

In the meantime, we have a Central MA Fiber Map we worked on all year, and have posted the link to it here. A work in progress, it includes fiber farms, shops, learning centers, and processing mills. All sorts of natural fibers can be found in our region, and this map will serve the self-guided enthusiast. Please always call ahead to the farms, especially, as many have limited staffing and rules about visiting their animals.
